Ranked Choice Voting is a ballot counting method that results in selecting a true majority winner with a single ballot, giving the voter more choices while eliminating costly runoffs.
Ranked Choice Voting works by allowing the voter to rank his or her choices in order of preference. When the ballots are counted, each vote counts for the highest ranked candidate who can use it to win.
Ranked Choice Voting avoids the "spoiler" effect that prompts defensive voting, and leads to more choices on the ballot. RCV also saves time and money by accomplishing runoff elections with a single vote.
Voters in Cary, North Carolina used a ranked-choice ballot for their October 9th, 2007 municipal election. The new method saves the Town of Cary about $60,000. On September 4th the city council of Aspen, Colorado, voted 5-0 to place a measure on the November 6th ballot to adopt IRV for mayoral and city council elections.
